What is Kubernetes, really?

As in the ship of Theseus… If you replace each Kubernetes component… what is it that you get at the end?

An API, an ecosystem and the sum of its parts.

BTW, is kubernetes an overkill? Yes and No

I think is a necessary evil to avoid selling your soul to a cloud provider.
